The elevator at the Darkhal Guril Tejeel flourmill located in Darkhan soum, Darkhan-Uul Province exploded at 12:40 on January 26. Wheat being preserved was heated from below and had spoiled. While the spoiled wheat was being offloaded, the 500-ton capacity elevator exploded. The explosion forced the elevator open and threw debris 30 to 40 meters. Official sources said that no one was seriously injured. The elevator loader, who was offloading the spoiled wheat when the explosion happened, suffered only a slight head injury. A working group led by the Chief of National Emergency Management Agency went to Darkhan-Uul to assess the situation. According to chemists and fire experts, wheat and sawdust are heated during the wheat preservation process. If these merge with oxygen and reach a high concentration, an explosion could occur.
Chief Deputy at the local Emergency Management Office Yu.Oyunsuren on the accident
-How much wheat was being preserved in the elevator? -There were 100 tons of wheat. It was leftover wheat from 2009 and had spoiled due to heat from below. The loader and driver of the mill were offloading the wheat. Relevant officials are working on figuring out why the accident happened. -At the time, how many workers were working? -There were only two people; the loader and the driver. The loader was slightly injured, and aside from that, no one was hurt. -Is it true that because of the explosion, half of the mill building caught fire and the concrete wall located 50 meters away from the mill building was dented? -I want to note that nothing was on fire or burnt. The concrete wall was dented from debris that was thrown due to the explosion.
